ADV400 Twitter Assignment

For my twitter assignment I did the following:

Downloaded Twitterific (3rd party application) and tweeted from it. Twitterific is kind of cool because it pops up whenever one of the people I'm following "tweets".

I participated in 3 trending topics seen here (http://twitter.com/christieparks88) about the SuperBowl, Valentine's Day, and a nowplaying for the song I was listening to.

The following is my analysis of 5, top 100 tweeters

1) Kim Kardashian (http://twitter.com/KimKardashian): I decided to look further into this twitter account because we had talked about it in class. For the most part, she seems like a normal person tweeting about random things in her life. Apparently she is rooting for the saints in the superbowl because she posted about that quite a few times. When we talked about Kim in class, we noted that she makes $10,000 for each tweet about a product. I noticed that she was promoting Sephora, Geaux Sports Jewelry, and apparently her own collection. These were the only things in her page without hitting "more". If I were making $10,000 to tweet about something, I'm pretty sure I'd make it my main job to find companies to tweet about!

2) Taylor Swift (http://twitter.com/taylorswift13): I was scrolling through the top 100 and came across Taylor Swift. I thought "I wonder what could be going on in this girls life". Apparently she also tweets about random things but hers somehow seems a little sweeter and more genuine. She posts about nominations and has things like "EEEEEEE!!!" which shows that shes excited. Its basically adorable. She also keeps her followers informed as to events such as Hope For Haiti and the Grammys. I didn't really see any endorsements which makes me respect her a little more than Kim.

3) John McCain (tp://twitter.com/SenJohnMcCain): I wanted to do a comparative analysis of the recent presidential candidate and president because this social media buzz is said to have greatly changed the way we will see campaigns in the future. John McCain's twitter seems very professional. He posts about political issues and what hes doing such as "on the radio" and "at a press conference" which is kind of cool because you don't really see people his age into the social media aspects. I guess he learned that its important! Also he had a post about how he was proud of his wife which was sweet and made him seem like a normal person.

4) Barack Obama (http://twitter.com/BarackObama): In continuing my comparison as previously stated, I decided to look at Obama's tweets. I feel like he really understands how to use twitter. His tweets make him seem human as well as professional. One of his posts states "I'm still fired up. I'm still ready to go. And its because of you." I think this just shows his youthful spirit. He does have some posts like McCain where he tells what hes doing such as "taking questions" and such things but he just seems more open about everything.

5) Rainn Wilson (http://twitter.com/rainnwilson): I wanted to look up Rainn because I love him on the Office. I was hoping his tweets would be more entertaining but he actually just posts about his everyday life. I just can't get over how these celebrities really are real people. To some extent, I think I picture them sitting on the set all the time and not having real lives. Rainn posts about what hes doing and sometimes leaves funny comments but I don't know why its in a top 100.

I integrated a twitter widget on this blog which shows my recent "tweets".

Finally, the marketing plan I analyzed is the one for the Dear John movie. I noticed that a couple people I follow on twitter posted stuff about it, so I decided to look it up. Plus it was recently on the list of trending topics. I didn't want to look up any other information about it other than what was on its twitter page to see if I fully grasped the concepts they were presenting. First of all, they must know that many of the people following them were stuck in snow because they tweeted "Stuck in the snow? Escape to summer on the beach with #DearJohn - now in theaters! Tix and showtimes right here http://bit.ly/dhPNvy" I thought this was VERY clever and totally got my attention. They also had a Sweeps where you could win a signed poster, a sony reader, and a cd soundtrack of the movie. This is a great way to get the people who are already following you excited as well as get the people who follow them, interested. I also like that some people have @ replied to them putting reviews of the movie up. This is nice because people feel like they're getting actual reviews.
